Debate anyone? ... It this art still alive?
Adding links to professional discussions/debates on COVID-19 related topics as we locate them....
Remember debate classes or debate projects back in junior or senior high school?
The teacher provided us with a choice of “Be it Resolved” statements. Students would try to pick a topic of interest to them. They needed to either respond PRO or CONTRA to the resolution, providing their best evidence. Once both sides presented and backed up their arguments, there was the opportunity for rebuttal. Whoever had defended their stance the most convincingly “won” the debate. The actual winners were the students in the audience, who learned so much while watching the two sides on every issue tee off against each other.
Clearly, in today’s media environment, replete with social media/Trusted News Initiative/Big Pharma directed censorship, quick sound-byte headlines, cancel culture and more, we have lost our appreciation for the art of debate. Someone determines the orthodoxy (the “true” belief statements) and then immediately shuts down proponents of a CONTRA argument and evidence.
So instead of this:
we have this:
and headlines like these from https://reclaimthenet.org/
The OTHER SIDE is being censored out.
Speakers from the OTHER SIDE are given “strikes”, shadow banned, deplatformed, banned from their laboratories and classrooms, are fined, fired, even charged and jailed (in the case of Julian Assange, for example.)
What a way to prevent the listening audience from learning to weigh the pros and cons of any argument, to think critically, to examine and critique evidence presented, and then to make evidence-based decisions!
When the “OFFICIAL SIDE” wants to present its case, it provides next to no evidence to support its stance. And when the OTHER SIDE invites the OFFICIAL SIDE for a formal debate-style presentation of their arguments and evidence, the invitations are ignored.
See: https://brightlightnews.com/open-invite/ for one example.
So then it is refreshing when we get to hear actual debate happening aspects of the COVID-19 crisis - since actual debates on this and other topics are rare these days.
BUT THE LIST IS SHORT….
